keep your blood pumping: Free vascular screenings April 26th

A test that normally costs $125 - $150 per person will be offered for FREE on Saturday, April 26th at the Wishek Clinic from 10:00AM-2:30PM.  St. Alexius is putting on this Vascular Screening Day to prevent vascular disease, carotid artery disease and reduce the risk of stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and other conditions that greatly harm the blood flow through your body.  The screening is recommended for anyone 50 years of age or older with a history of smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart or vascular disease.

Vascular screenings consist of the following painless and noninvasive tests that could save your life:

  • Peripheral Artery Screening:  A procedure which screens for plaque build-up in the leg arteries by taking the blood pressure in both your arm and leg.
  • Carotid Ultrasound:  Through sound waves, this test looks for the percent of plaque build-up in the carotids (the two main arteries that carry blood to the head and neck), detecting the risk of a stroke.
  • Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound:  Detects and measures the size of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (a weakened, bulging spot in the artery that runs through your abdomen and supplies blood to the lower half of your body), also through sound waves.

When finished with your screenings, an RN will discuss your results with you and offer education on reducing risk factors in the future.  Each screening will take approximately 15-20 minutes.  Appointments are limited and are scheduled through St. Alexius by calling (701) 530-7749.
