SIM-ND TRUCK PROVIDES LIFELIKE EMERGENCY TRAINING

On May 8th, a large truck rolled into the Wishek Hospital employee parking lot around noon to provide some of the highest technology training the world of medicine has seen to date.  Three WHC medical providers, five nurses, and the majority of EMTs underwent emergency care training in the SIM-ND (Simulation in Motion – North Dakota) Truck.
Shelly Glaesman, RN-BSN, coordinated the training and was excited about this new and unique opportunity to provide a method of practicing medicine on lifelike mannequins. “It allows us to gain experience so we are prepared when a real patient comes through the door,” she commented.  The SIM-ND Truck has traveled throughout North Dakota since 2012, providing free trainings to medical providers through money received from a grant.  According to SIM-ND’s website, these simulations put the medical providers in a variety of emergency scenarios using computerized mannequins that talk, breath, have heartbeats, and can react to medications.  All simulation experiences are set up to give the users repeated practice that increases confidence in their skills.   The WHC plans on having the SIM-ND truck back again this fall.
The North Dakota Department of Health provides oversight for SIM-ND with the goal to deliver standardized education to every pre-hospital and hospital emergency care team in the state.  As they collaborate with the state’s largest health systems, SIM-ND brings highly-trained medical educators all over North Dakota under the leadership of STAR (the UND School of Medicine's human patient simulation center).
